Behind the Hardhat

A Day in the Life of a Clarke Quantity Surveyor

How did you get started in the industry?

Following my graduation from University my first job role was as a Trainee Project Manager. I continued my path as a project manager for approximately 10years before taking up a Quantity Surveying position.

What skills do you need to work as a Quantity Surveyor?

As a Quantity Surveyor, there are numerous essential skills to develop and refine. Excellent communication skills are crucial, as you will be liaising regularly with clients to understand their requirements, manage their expectations, and address any potential issues to maintain strong professional relationships. Collaboration with the project team is also key, as Quantity Surveyors work closely with site managers, designers, engineers, and other stakeholders to achieve project goals. Additionally, negotiation skills play a vital role when dealing with sub-contractors and suppliers, as you must secure competitive prices, favourable terms, and efficient delivery schedules.

Another core skill is strong numeracy, which is essential for monitoring and managing project costs. Budget management is one of the primary responsibilities of a Quantity Surveyor, requiring meticulous attention to detail to prepare, track, and control financial resources throughout the project lifecycle. This involves accurately estimating costs, analysing variances, and implementing cost-saving measures where necessary to ensure the project remains financially viable. Proficiency in financial forecasting and understanding cost data is also critical, as these skills enable you to make informed decisions, anticipate challenges, and provide actionable insights to the wider team.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to work in your role?

Apprentice routes or part time learning are a good option – they give you the balance of the studying and learning in workplace environment which is invaluable in construction.
