Behind the Hardhat

A Day in the Life of a Clarke HR Officer

How did you get started in the industry?

My career path is a pretty simple pathway – University – development within roles. I studied Business Studies at A-Level, wasn’t sure about what degree to do but decided to do HRM (Human Resource Management) at Ulster University as the modules sounded like they most related to my interests.

My dad worked on construction sites his whole life and my brother is a joiner so there has always been an interest within the construction industry. I done my placement year in a construction company and got kept on part time alongside my studies for final year. I got a graduate position in another manufacturing/construction company and was there for number of years. This role allowed me to develop myself, skills and knowledge to meet the requirements of the role at Clarke. I have been with Clarke for over a year and a half now.

What skills do you need to work as a HR Officer?

The main skills I require for my role is excellent people skills. It is important that you are an approachable, trustworthy, dependable person – these qualities align with the Clarke values. The best thing about working for Clarke is the people that are employed here.

It is important to be flexible and be able to adaptable as no two days are the same and your day could change quite quickly at times.

Like any role within Clarke, the ability to work well in a team and a can-do attitude is important throughout.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to work in your role?

Like any position within Clarke, my advice would be to work hard within your role, show that you are keen to learn and develop your knowledge and skills and don’t be afraid to ask questions.

What do you like most about your job?

My favourite part of my role is the people aspect. I enjoy having the ability to engage with all departments and building good relationships.

What would you consider to be your biggest professional achievement?

For me, my biggest professional achievement has been my personal development over the years from being a placement student, to graduate, HR Admin, HR Officer. This professional development within other companies allowed me to have the skillset to meet the requirements for the role in Clarke.
